Facts About the Wood Bison

INTRODUCTION
Wood Bison are the largest land animals that live in North America. They were once widespread throughout Canada, but now can only be found in a few protected locations. They were thought to be extinct in the early 1900’s, but they were discovered in one area of Canada. With protection efforts they have been re-established and expanded to other locations in Canada. They no longer live in the United States, but a closely related bison, the Plains Bison, still does.
Habitat loss and over-hunting were two of the main causes of the loss of herds of the Wood Bison. They are now protected under national and international laws and several efforts are being made to restore populations to their native habitats.
