Facts About the Mimic Octopus
INTRODUCTION
The Mimic Octopus was first spotted in 1988 at the mouth of a river connecting to the ocean in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Mimic Octopus’ scientific name is Thaumoctopus mimic. It took so long for marine biologists to find this octopus because it is able to mimicry– which means it has excellent camouflage abilities and is able to hide from predators easily. They are able to change the color of their skin from pigment sacs scattered all over their body called chromophores. There isn’t that much extensive research on the Mimic Octopus, and thus we don’t know exactly how many mimic octopuses are in the wild.
