Facts About the Kodiak Bear

INTRODUCTION

The Kodiak Bear also known by its scientific name Ursus Arctos Middendorffi. It is the largest of the brown bear species. It can also be called by its nickname, the Alaskan Bear. This species is only selectively found in the Kodiak Archipelago which is in the southern coast of Alaska. The archipelago is a separated group of islands off from mainland Alaska.

The bear’s descendants are believed to have come from Asia over 250,000 years ago, spreading to Europe and then to North America around 15,000 years ago. It is believed that the Kodiak Bear has been living on the archipelago for 12,000 years which has allowed this species to develop some significant differences and evolve away from other subspecies.
