Facts About the Hairy Frogfish

Facts About the Hairy Frogfish

INTRODUCTION

There is no shortage of interesting creatures in the wild, and the Hairy Frogfish is no different. As you might guess, they appear to be hairy although the “hairs” are not really hair, they are appendages (an attachment of their body like our legs, arms, fingers and toes).

Frogfish also have the ability to blend into their surroundings so that they can sneak up on their prey! Scientists think that the closer the Frogfish is to algae, the more often they are seen with “hair” because it is their way of blending in.

A lot of times, they will be seen without any appendages, and they get their scientific name Antennarius striatus from the stripes (or stria) they have on their bodies. Frogfish are members of the Anglerfish family, and they catch their prey similarly to how the anglerfish do – with the rod on the top of their heads.
