Facts About the Gerenuk
INTRODUCTION
A Gerenuk is an antelope with a very long neck. In the local Somali language, the word gerenuk means giraffe neck.
Did you know that gerenuk, much like other antelope, can leave marks on branches and twigs with a smell (scent)? They have special glands that can be found near their eyes, knees and hooves that release an asphalt smell!
There are approximately 95,000 Gerenuk alive in the wild, and they are found in the East of Africa in 5 different countries. The countries where they are found are: Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti.
