INTRODUCTION

When we talk about Peacocks, we usually think of a large, ground dwelling bird with a beautiful, blue and green plume with round, golden, eye-like markings in the center. However, what many people don’t realize is that the Peacock is really only the male of the family of birds called “Peafowl.” The female Peafowl is called a Peahen.

There are three different kinds of Peafowl. The Indian Peafowl, as its name implies, is from India. The Green Peafowl lives a little further east, around a country called Myanmar. A third kind of Peafowl, the Congo Peafowl, lives in central Africa, around a river called the Congo.

While most Peacocks have plumes that are beautiful, shimmering colors of blues and greens and gold, there are two reasons that a Peacock may be completely white. The first is called leucism. Leucism is a condition in which a bird has too little of many of the chemicals that make up the colors of a bird’s feathers. In leucism, a Peafowl will retain its normally blue eyes, and the structure of its feathers is exactly the same as a normally colored Peacock, but its plumage will be white.
